The NRLA (New Railway Link through the Alps) comprises two new base tunnels across the Swiss Alps, the Lötschberg tunnel (34.6 kilometres) and the St. Gotthard tunnel (57 kilometres), as well as the development of access lines. This new infrastructure will lead to a significant increase in capacity and more efficiency in rail transport, thus generating crucial momentum for the transfer of freight transport from road to rail. The Lötschberg base tunnel is operational since 2007, and the St. Gotthard base tunnel is scheduled to open in 2016.
