Every day traffic accidents harm human beings and pollute the soil, water and air. The situation is particularly devastating when hazardous goods are involved. The accident in the St. Gotthard road tunnel on 24 October 2001 showed that it is not only declared hazardous goods that are dangerous. A seemingly harmless load of tarpaulins and tyres turned into highly inflammable hazardous material, causing 11 deaths.
The Alpine Initiative is a Swiss asscociation. In 1989 the association launched the popular initiative "for the protection of the Alpine region from transit traffic", that was accepted on the 20th February 1994 by a majority of both the Swiss population and the cantons.
