Doubling of the St. Gotthard road tunnel

The Article on the Protection of the Alps bans the development of transit roads and thus also bans the construction of a second bore of the St. Gotthard road tunnel. Ever since 1994, the truck lobby has been trying to reverse this ban on the increase in road capacity. Each attemps, however, has ended in a fiasco - and the last one in particular. In 2004, 63% of the Swiss rejected the "Avant" proposal to build a second road tunnel at the Gotthard Pass. They knew that this would sabotage the Swiss transfer policy and expose them to traffic hell, as suffered by the population of the Brenner Pass.

Alpine Initiative

The Alpine Initiative is a Swiss asscociation. In 1989 the association launched the popular initiative "for the protection of the Alpine region from transit traffic", that was accepted on the 20th February 1994 by a majority of both the Swiss population and the cantons.
